Abstract
Recent studies suggests that hyperglycemia is an important contributor to the development of micro and macroangiopathy. Among the biochemical alteration and characteristic furthers of this hyperglycemia, are the formation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs), increased oxidative stress and reduced antioxydant capacity. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the variation of advanced glycation end products and the parameters of antioxidant status in type 2 diabetic Tunisian patients. This study was included 70 type 2 diabetic patients (mean age 42 ± 12 years) and 50 healthy control subjects (mean age 44 ± 10 years). Compared with healthy control subjects, diabetic patients had significantly increase of AGEs (8.85 ± 2.05 103 vs 5.06 ± 1.4 103 UA/g p < 10-3) and significant increase of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPX, GR and CAT; p < 0.05). We found that diabetic patients had significantly lower total antioxidant status (p = 0,001). The increase of AGE showed a chronic disturbance of hyperglycemia involved in the genesis of oxidative stress. The compensatory increase of the antioxidant enzymes is induced as a response to free radical overproduction in type 2 diabetes.
