Surgical site infection on orthopaedic material in adults

Abstract

Our retrospective study concerned 1388 patients operated in adult orthopaedics and traumatology units of the Mohamed Kassab Institute of Orthopaedics, with implantation of material. Twenty three patients developed an infection of the operating site on orthopaedic material (incidence 1,6%). The average age of this population was 51 years with a male ascendancy. The favouring factors of these infections were : the type of used material, the ASA score, the diabetes and the antecedents of orthopaedic surgery. These infections were mono-microbial for the greater part, with ascendancy of negative bacilli Gram. Thirty six percent of the isolated bacteria were resistant to antibiotics. The antibiotic prophylaxis was applied according to recommendations of the French Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care.
