Abstract

We studied the interference of turbidity caused by hypertriglyceridemia on the determination of 21 common biochemical parameters, using the protocol recommended by the IFCC and the SFBC, with overload being achieved by an Intralipid® solution. Our results show a positive interference of turbidity on the determination of sodium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, total and direct bilirubin, and uric acid for moderate hypertriglyceridemia, while magnesium, glucose, and proteins were rather affected by higher triglyceride concentrations. In terms of accuracy, the most significant deviations were observed with phosphorus, bilirubin, proteins, and uric acid. Finally, pending the implementation of a radical solution to the influence of hyperlipidemia, the use of a sample blank or the addition of a clarifying agent can provide simple and relatively effective solutions to overcome this interference.
